Advocacy & change
In 2017 we carried out research into the representation of Disabled people in the music education workforce and found that the figures were either incredibly low, or did not even exist.
This means that there aren’t enough Disabled role models in music education, Disabled voices aren’t part of the music ed conversation and this career doesn’t seem like an option to young Disabled musicians.
As part of our Think2020 work we began a campaign to tackle this, involving 3 key elements:
- A drive to ensure strong representation for disabled people in the Drake Music team – being the change we wanted to see in the world.
- A public campaign for better representation, culminating in a national event with over 100 influential people from across music education attending and a published guide to diversifying the music ed workforce.
- An open-access scheme for emerging disabled musicians to train as music leaders, with on-the-job mentoring and real-life teaching experience working with our partners across the music ed sector.
