Music Education Hubs

Updates

The National Plan for Music Education requires hubs to deliver “high quality music provision” for SEN/Disabled (SEND) pupils, as well as better use of music technology. Drake Music is a national leader in both areas and can provide advice and support to hubs on issues such as:

Accessible Singing

Auditing and local needs analyses of SEND pupils
We are experienced in producing reviews, reports and analysis for clients such as Youth Music, Gloucestershire Music Service & Musical Futures.

Assistive Music Technology
We can either advise, train or deliver on assistive music technology, or we can blend all three as with our RAMP It Up! programme for schools

Progression routes & curriculum based learning for SEND pupils
DM Education is all about better access to formal assessment & accreditation in music. In autumn 2011 we carried out a major national consultation into ‘disabling barriers to formal music education’. The findings and recommended ‘benchmarks’ that follow from this consultation provide invaluable information for Hubs in meeting their commitments to SEN/Disabled children and young people. CPD & training

Drake Music took part in the DfE’s National Plan consultations and our accessible singing work is highlighted as an exemplary case-study in using music technology to break down disabling barriers (p.51 of the National Plan). We continue to discuss implementation of the National Plan with both the DfE and the Arts Council, especially in respect of the controversial ‘per-pupil national funding formula’ weighted for free school meals. Hubs need to be aware that they should not rely on the free school meals premium to provide the extra funds required to deliver high quality music provision for SEND pupils. There is no automatic correlation between the numbers of SEND pupils and numbers of pupils receiving free school meals in each local area.
