Event overview

After a short break and a special event at Crux Festival, we’re delighted to be back at Rich Mix, with a session focusing on sensory practices. This time, we’re welcoming presentations from:

  • Rhiannon Armstrong (she/they): A transdisciplinary artist known nationally and internationally for inclusive, emotionally intuitive participatory work. Rhiannon is a recipient of the Adrian Howells Award for Intimate Performance.
  • Simon East (he/him): A musician and creative technologist working with movement and sound. Simon has developed Flowfal, a system that takes movement from musicians, dancers, or audience members to trigger sound and visual effects.
  • + more to be announced!

The event will also include opportunities for networking and music making and testing a selection of instruments from Drake Music’s Accessible Musical Instrument Collection.

While this will be an in-person event, there will also be the opportunity to view the presentations online. Register for an online ticket to receive the YouTube link, which will be shared ahead of the event.

Access

  • The venue, Rich Mix, is wheelchair accessible, via a permanent entrance ramp and lifts inside the building. The event will be held in The Studio, which is level throughout and is located on the 4th floor.
  • There are accessible toilets (with RADAR locks) on the ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor and the 4th floor.
  • There will be a quiet space available

About the speakers

Rhiannon will share some of the sounds and methodology from their current project, The White Noise Factory. The White Noise Factory is a set of sound and music collaborations that privilege sensory meaning-making over intellectual meaning-making, and a responsive listening environment in which to share the products of those collaborations. Among other places, the project has been developed in specialist schools across England and an opera house in Germany.

Simon East (he/him)

Simon will demonstrate Flowfal in action and allow audience members to try it out. Over the last 10 years he has created many different types of installations and performances using this technology. Making these immersive and interactive is a key part of his approach. He is also exploring how these kinds of installations can be of therapeutic use for Neurodivergent people and those with disabilities.

We can’t wait to see you there!
