Listen to the 2019/20 Emergent Commissions

On May 14th we held #EmergentDigital – a day of events to launch three new commissions by early-career Disabled artists as part of our Emergent: A Music Legacy programme.

Emergent supports Disabled artists to further their creative practice through a programme of artistic commissions and training to be music leaders.

The 2019/20 commissions are in partnership with Sound and Music and the theme is Music and Moving Image, with each artist responding to a brief to reflect on their experience in the world. All 3 musicians have also now been added to the British Music Collection as part of the process.

Remi Fox-Novak (Nottingham), The Dyr Sister (Hull) and Robbie Ashworth (London) came together for a two day workshop at Drake Music’s offices, then worked separately on their tracks and collaborated with artists on the moving image to accompany them.

Watch and listen to all three new commissions:

Remi Fox-Novak

Remi created this track entirely on iPads and it was created and recorded live, with  minimal tweaking after in Ableton. The visuals were created by Bruce Asbestos.

Robbie Ashworth

Robbie created this piece using Logic and other software, after beginning the composition at the piano. The visuals are created by Rebel Films, to a clear brief from Robbie about his concept and vision.

The Dyr Sister

Sally began composing this track using technology which was new to her to build up beat loops. She then created the bass and the string parts for the musicians in her band The Dyr Sister. She collaborated with artist Blue Beany on her visuals.
