The 2012 Paralympics promises to be the most watched yet. The eyes of the world will be on the opening ceremony tonight and on the many sporting & arts events between now and 9th September. Not only will we be introduced to the amazing athletes we have been hearing about, we will also have an opportunity to see some of the many disabled artists (professional & amateur) who live and work in the UK. People around the world will be able to witness the wealth of talent that exists and that we encounter on a daily basis. This is a really exciting time!
Some of the musicians who have been – and will be – performing as part of the Cultural Olympiad and the 2012 Unlimited Festival, with the Paraorchestra, have been associated with Drake Music over the years. The concept for the orchestra was originally conceived and developed by our artistic team (under the title ‘Concerto’). We are delighted that these musicians will be showcasing their work on a world platform.
We would like to wish everyone performing at venues around the country over the next few weeks the most fantastic time. We very much hope that they will inspire many others to explore their creative potential, develop musical skills and hone their talents!
Drake Music will continue to break down disabling barriers to music-making through working in education, training, research & development, and commissioning new work. Our focus is on nurturing creativity through exploring music and technology in imaginative ways. We put quality music-making at the heart of everything we do, connecting disabled and non-disabled people locally, nationally and internationally.
In the coming years, we will investigate and develop different ways of working at the intersection of music, disability, art & technology and break new ground artistically and in terms of participatory practice. We want to share our practice as freely and widely as possible and to extend our reach.
