In Motion is a musical film commissioned by Drake Music – Connect and Collaborate London, 2013. It is an electro-acoustic piece in three ‘movements’, created via group improvisation using a range of acoustic sound sources and assistive music technology including percussion, wheelchairs, hulusi, Indian flute, voice, iPads and Soundbeam.
In Motion embraces the principle of ‘relay’ as stimulus for the form and content of a composition in music and moving image. Layers and musical shifts were created by the passing of musical material between 4 musicians. Acoustically-produced sounds were sampled and recomposed by another member of the quartet, within group improvisational playing using iPads and Soundbeam: Melanie playing with samples of Tom’s wheelchair spoke percussion; Rosie playing with Howard’s Indian flute, pitch-shifted to create deep bass etc.
