Figurenotes is an alternative to conventional musical notation which has been used successfully by young people with learning difficulties (including some on the autistic spectrum) in Finland and Scotland. Figurenotes can enable the use of notation within formal music education where conventional notation might otherwise present a barrier.
The Figurenotes notation system uses colour and shape to define the musical elements of pitch and duration and is based on the ability to match identical symbols. Each musical note has a corresponding Figurenotes symbol and with the help of stickers attached to their instrument (e.g. a music keyboard or guitar fret board), learners are asked to ‘play what you see’.
