We are excited to open applications for our next round of Emergent commissions, in partnership with Sound and Music.
Music and Film
We have 3 commission opportunities open to emerging artists who identify as Deaf and/or Disabled and use sound within their practice.
The commissions are to:
- Create a new piece of music
- Collaborate with a film-maker to create some moving image work to go with the music
This is an opportunity to develop your practice and be supported to collaborate with someone working in a different medium.
Daryl Beeton, Programme Leader for Arts & Collaborations at Drake Music said:
“We want to support Disabled artists to take the next steps in their careers. These opportunities are a way for Disabled musicians to try something new, to expand their work and gain experience of working on a professional commission.
This year is very exciting as all the Commissions will be featured on the British Music Collection by our partners Sound and Music. Plus, this is the first time we’ve brought music and moving image together in a collaborative way, so I am really excited to see how the films will enhance these new compositions even further.”

“Sound and Music is thrilled to be partnering with Drake Music on their latest commission call out and to be a part of their ongoing pioneering and essential work.
We are particularly excited to be collaborating on this opportunity with its focus on ‘Music and Film’ and to be able to support, host and promote the 3 awarded commissions on the British Music Collection – an online space and discovery platform for new music and creators in the UK.
Our aim is to support composers and artists from all backgrounds, and we want to work with and represent more individuals who self-identify as deaf and/or disabled, to be able to celebrate their work and to introduce them to new audiences.”
A word about ’emerging’…
The idea of ’emerging’ artists can be a tricky one. Does it mean young? How long can you be emerging? What if you’re an experienced artist in one medium, but trying something new in another?
We use the term in an inclusive way, because we understand that artistic practice is a broad church and not easy to define.
