The Drake Music 2018/19 Emergent Commissions had a theme of “Music and the Audience”, which meant each artist explored different ways to engage with the audience in the creation of their commission piece.
Dike is a composer and performer who began writing his own pop songs aged 9. His work covers pop, R&B and music for theatre.
In 2049 Dike creates a world where a humanoid is sent to present day London from the year 2049 with news of a cosmic event that changes human brain chemistry for ever.
This piece explores signal flow and interruption, in a musical exploration of the electrical/mechanical processes happening in our brains.
The lyrics are in part inspired by workshops with people who have experienced brain injury, and the live performance of the piece (at our event The Radical Sound of Many) included opportunities for the audience to interact with the song by triggering samples or interrupting some of the musical refrains.
Dike said:
“It was a real joy and honour to work with Drake Music on the commission.”
