In October and November 2021 Drake Music’s touring project, Planted Symphony, delivered some music making activities to the areas we had travelled to.
In Dorset, this meant working with The Remix and Dorset Music hub.
The Remix is an inclusive youth performance company for young disabled and non-disabled people aged 12 to 19. The project was co-delivered by DM’s Musical Inclusion Manager, Bea Hubble, and music leaders Hannah Cummings and Shaun Keys.
Our aim was to bring some elements of our Planted Symphony project to the young people at The Remix.
This would be combined with The Remix’s project this year which is a program of performances and workshops centring around gossip, taking inspiration from Thomas Hardy’s literature from the local area.
Exploring sound
Over three days, we made music and explored sound together outside and inside using our voices, GarageBand on iPads and acoustic instruments (kindly lent to us by Dorset Music HUB).
The young people were so creative and musical. We captured recordings of some of their work for the music leaders to work into three tracks.
These tracks are now being used to accompany the movement and acting sections of the groups work for a short film being produced in February 2022.
Dance and movement
Throughout the project we had some amazing moments as a group. These included Young People sharing the music leading of the session and using different musical sounds as cues to move to different instruments and musical styles.
It was so interesting to work on this project with The Remix’s dance and movement tutor – a new experience for the Drake Music Planted Symphony Team.
It really showed the value of working cross arts and what we can learn from each other – another example of what can be achieved in collaboration!
