DM Education
DM Education aims to increase access to formal music eduation for disabled people. From 'P'-levels, to Performance assessments and exams, to Post-graduate degrees, we want to increase opportunities for disabled people to be formally assessed and accredited at every level. To get involved please go straight to the DM Education web pages. Or, if you want an overview of the main things we're currently focusing on, read on:
We are committed to creating, sharing and promoting accessible, reuseable software resources for learning and assessment. Such resources not only make formal musical pathways accessible to pupils and students, but also provide a course framework for teachers. We have created our own Introduction To Music course, accredited by OCNSWR (Open College Network South West Region) at Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2. Introduction to Music is now freely available from Drake Music and comes with a comprehensive set of learning and assessment resources for Clicker 5 software. We have also created accessible singing resources in partnership with Sing Up, and are currently piloting accessible resources for BTEC Music & Performing Arts, as well as resources for the Music Motivator programme at Barrs Court School, Hereford.
We have carried out a nationwide consultation to identify 'disabling barriers to formal music education'. The findings represent a signficant insight into the experiences of the SEN/Disabled young people and musicians, teachers and music educators who shared their views and are available to read and download here.
We deliver curriculum based music lessons for students and training for teachers. All of our accessible resources and courses such as the Introduction to Music course, accessible singing resources and BTEC Music resources are created and piloted in close partnership with schools. We can deliver tailored training in these and many other aspects of accessible, formal music education.
We work to lobby, raise awareness and influence people to promote better access to formal music education. For example, we regularly attend and speak at conferences such as NAME and Music Learning Live. We run seminars and presentations for trainee music teachers at Universities such as Bristol, Exeter and Northampton. We've been involved in the consultation process for the Government's National Plan for Music education and also advised on the National Music Technology Strategy.
All of this work comes together through the DM Education web pages - a place to share, promote and discuss information on all aspects of disabled access to formal music education, the music curriculum and accreditation. We share everything we know on the DM Education web pages. Anyone can create an account, so we really hope that you'll share all that you know too, because then we can all better understand the opportunities, barriers and ways forward.
